Chaise Longue or Chaise Lounge?

Longue or Lounge? It is said that nearly a third of all English words are derived from the French language. One obvious example of this is the chaise longue, translating literally to ‘long chair’ in French.

Throughout history, the chaise longue has also been referred to as the day bed or indeed the newer variation which our American cousins have made popular: the chaise lounge.

Although the name and structure might have changed and evolved over time, its function as a haven of relaxation and luxury has remained the same.

Today, the chaise longue is typically not used as a bed, but instead offers a cosy place to sit or lounge while reading a good book or enjoying a glass of wine. Chaise longues are typically seen in the more private setting of a home such as the study or bedroom.
