This month we chat with Megan from “East to West”…
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in a multitude of places – design books, magazines, blogs, pinterest, flea markets, etc. I’m always looking for good design and am constantly snapping shots of inspiring elements, be it a coffee shop counter or a patterned scarf in a shop window.
What is your favourite piece of furniture at home?
It’s hard to pick just one! I’d have to say my nightstand, which is a vintage yellow campaign desk, and dining room table, with scandanavian lines made from reclaimed teak wood from Jakarta.
What has been your favourite room design project to date?
I’m just finishing up an 8,400 sq. ft. office space in Santa Monica, CA. The project was a huge undertaking, but the results have been amazing. I was able to design a lot of custom elements to incorporate into the space like a modern reception desk and big sliding barn doors. It’s been so rewarding to create a space the employees truly love working in.
What is your best piece of design advice?
Get to know yourself, and be patient. Good design doesn’t happen overnight, it’s curated over time. Look through books, magazines, blogs, even your closet, and start a collection of images you love. Assess what draws you to those images specifically so that you can hone in on what you like best. If you take the time to get to know your style, you’ll be able to make buying decisions with ease, and your home will be a true expression of yourself. I’m a firm believer that if you really love something it will always work in your space.
