Lauren Cherice Designs

In a new series of blog posts, we’ll be introducing some of the best, brightest and up and coming stars from the design industry. This week, we spend some time with Lauren Wilson; the owner and talent behind Lauren Cherice Designs – a screen printing and surface design company based in Yorkshire, England.

Tell us about your design company, how did it launch?

Lauren Cherice Designs is currently based in the East Riding of Yorkshire. With my passion for screen-printing, I first began creating hand printed tote bags with my designs during University. This has since developed into a growing collection with new designs and products to be launched in 2013!

What is your background?

I have always had a strong passion for art but my love of screen-printing and textiles developed after completing an Art Foundation year at Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough. I then came across the BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design course at Cleveland College of Art in which I graduated in 2011 with First Class Honours.

Who/what made you get into the industry?

After exploring a number of areas after graduating, such as internships and volunteering abroad, I knew that my own business was what I wanted to pursue. Both experiences were fantastic. I learnt a lot about the industry and myself. I definitely recommend visiting both these areas after graduation.

Who are your favourite designers/artists/people who inspire you?

I am inspired by many areas whether its fine art, textiles or photography. Some of my favourite designers are Timorous Beasties, Christopher Farr, Orla Kiely, Funky Wombat Textiles, Rob Ryan, Cath Kidston and Flavor Paper. Inspiration is all around you.

What has been your favourite project/design you’ve ever done?

I really enjoyed my final major project at University. I chose to specialise in producing a collection of furnishing lengths. I only intended to do 6 lengths but enjoyed the process so much I ended up producing a collection of 12 lengths. It was a challenge but I loved every minute of it! They are some of my best pieces of work.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy almost every aspect of my work. I love the research/drawing process as I find it very relaxing. However, I also love the practical side, as it’s more hands on. It can get quite messy with printing, which is always fun!

What motivates you?

I think what motivates me the most is the fact I really enjoy what I’m doing. I get excited about new ideas and designs. Every opportunity is also exciting. I enjoy a challenge and when you’re a small independent business there is definitely some in your path.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

In five years time my dream would be to have my own studio fully set up and functioning so I can spend all my time screen-printing beautiful fabrics. I hope to have had some success and raised the profile of Lauren Cherice Designs.
